Online Therapy (telehealth)

How does online therapy differ from in-person?

The experience of online therapy or in-person is similar to modern video technology platforms. The major difference is the therapist may need to send you homework assignments, exercises, or handouts prior to and after the session.

Several studies are emerging that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy, provided you select a skilled therapist.

One of the drawbacks of online therapy is the emotional energy is can be slightly different compared to when you are in the room with the therapist. A way to increase the similarity of being in the room with the therapist is to use a laptop. Set up the laptop so your therapists can ideally see your full body, for example, place the laptop on a coffee table as you sit on a couch.  This will help your therapist see non-verbal cues. Also, you will see your therapist a little better on a laptop versus a phone.  Many of our clients have reported our online sessions have been as effective as in-person.  Connectivity issues can sometimes be frustrating if the video has a delay or cuts out, try to sit where you know your wifi is strongest.
